May 26, 2014 - On a beautiful
Memorial Day morning, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden
welcomed
about 200 injured veterans and supporters to the Vice President's
Residence for the start of the sixth annual UnitedHealthcare Ride 2
Recovery Memorial Challenge. Riders using bicycles, hand cycles
and
recumbents will travel to Virginia Beach, VA,
a distance of 350 miles, over six days. Ride
2
Recovery
is
a
501(c)
3 that "helps injured veterans improve their health and
wellness through individual and group cycling." The program
started in 2008 as rehabilitation therapy for veterans with PTSD and
traumatic brain injuries as well as physical wounds. Since then
dozens of Challenges have been held around the country. The rides
are limited to
200 participants, although for this ride a number of additional one-day
riders joined
for the first day. The riders divide up into four groups
according to ability, and are accompanied by support vehicles and
personnel. (Above) The Vice President takes a selfie.
