Former Sen. Jim Webb "Seriously Looking" at Possible 2016 Run...1 of 1 >
Sept. 23, 2014 -- Speaking at the National Press Club, former Sen. Jim Webb (D-VA), sounded a lot like a man who will run for president in 2016.  Webb addressed "what's going on in our country and what we can do to make things better."  He identified five areas where improvement is needed.  First, Webb said, America needs a clear statement of national security and foreign policy objectives.  He said such a clear statement has been lacking since the end of the Cold War, and that what we have now is a "tangled mess" based on "situational ethics."  Second, Webb said, policies must be implemented that give people hope for economic fairness and social justice; for example, he said, we should reconfigure the tax code.  Third, Webb said we must rebuild our infrastructure.  Fourth, he said the criminal justice system must be reformed.  Fifth, Webb said we need to "find a way to return good governance."  "The very administration of our government needs to be fixed," Webb said, and he callled for "auditing the entire federal government."

In response to a question, Webb said he is "seriously looking at the possibility" of seeking the Democratic nomination.  He said he is gauging support for a possible campaign based on "true fairness in society" and will decide in 4-5 months.  "We're taking a hard look and we'll get back to you in a few months," Webb said.  Asked why he would even want to run, Webb said, "With the right leadership we can get a lot of things done in this country."
Webb's most recent book, I Heard My Country Calling: A Memoir, came out in May 2014.
