Ed. Note: Apparently some tension at the CD7 Convention...

Official Statement from G. Jason Thompson, Chairman
Georgia Republican Party 7th Congressional District Committee

“Following the events of last Saturday’s District Conventions throughout the state of Georgia I have tried to remain both rational and professional. I had no intention of making any statement. However, a series of events that have occurred over the past 48 hours have left it impossible for me to remain silent.

First of all, I am extremely proud of the work accomplished by the leadership of the 7th Congressional District and our Nominating Committee – a group of true gentlemen in every sense of the word. The Memorial Dinner held Friday evening was a huge success honoring the memories of two amazing Republican women and we were honored to host both families.

The 7th District Convention leadership, our Convention Chairman, Secretary, and Parliamentarian did an outstanding job. The Convention followed every Rule down to the detail. We went out of our way…in fact above and beyond to make sure the process was fair to all delegates.

As Chairman it is my job to look out for the District and the Republican Party even if it means personal sacrifice instead of spotlight. That is what occurred Saturday. We are under incredible scrutiny this year more than ever. With every decision we made we took fairness and the Rules into account, so much so that as to avoid anything that could be construed as unfair to any campaign I even withdrew my name for consideration as a national delegate at the District Convention.

Yet, in the past 48 hours I have been bombarded with calls and emails calling me inexcusable names and have been accused of disenfranchising voters. The opposite is true. This is politics and I understand it can be a very filthy business. I get that and am able to deal with what goes on in the arena. However, when you threaten me personally, and even worse, when you threaten my family, you have taken it to another level with me.

Let me also say that I have been involved in the Republican Party since college. My children have grown-up in the 7th District, and the members of our District I consider to be extended members of my family. And members of my District have also been personally threatened. There is no excuse for this and it will not be tolerated.

I will conclude by saying that we have an election that is ongoing and our ultimate goal should be to defeat the left in November. We cannot do that divided.

If you want to be part of the problem let me be very clear - threats, intimidation, and Saul Alinksy-style thuggery will not be met with understanding. If you want to be part of the solution, then we must find a way to work together, and I will do everything I can to facilitate such.” - Jason
