RNC Statement On Rules Committee Meetings

WASHINGTON - Republican National Committee (RNC) Chairman Reince Priebus and Rules Committee Chair Enid Mickelsen released the following statement on this week’s Rules Committee meeting, where delegates met to consider amendments to the 2016 Rules of the Republican Party:

“Our Rules Committee meeting made clear the high level of unity within our Party,” said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus. “Grassroots voices from every state and territory have crafted a set of rules which will keep our Party strong at the local, state, and national level, and we honored the spirit of democracy by conducting our Rules Committee meeting in a completely open and transparent fashion.”

“I am proud of all of the work our Rules Committee has accomplished,” said Rules Committee Chair Enid Mickelsen. “The final rules package we will submit to the Convention is one every delegate can be proud of. Through productive and civil discussion, our Committee members have shown their commitment to working together to make sure our party is properly organized to win up and down the ballot, and I thank them for their contributions.”

Delegates Unbound and Free The Delegates Continue Joint Effort

Movement To Collect Signatures Begins In Earnest To Empower The Delegates Over Party Bosses

(Cleveland, OH) July 17, 2016 – Delegates Unbound issued the following statement in response to the Rules Committee powergrab by the RNC and the Trump campaign to consolidate power and ignore the will of the delegates.

“Trump's campaign manager Manafort boasting about 'crushing' reeks of muscling and strong-arming the will of the delegates." "Instead of unifying the Party, they've stolen power from the delegates, further poisoning the well," said M.Dane Water co-founder and advisor to Delegates Unbound.

This is the first time in nearly 40-years that the national GOP Convention Rules Committee has bound delegates. Such action would not be necessary if the presumptive nominee had the widespread support of the delegates. Over 54% of Republican voters voted against Donald Trump. With nearly 17-million voters choosing other candidates in the GOP Primary Process, party leaders cannot gloss over the fissures the RNC and Trump campaign have exposed. The fact they took these draconian actions prove they did not have the support of the delegates.

"We will not stand for totalitarian Party bosses in smoke-filled rooms cutting deals strangling the voice of the delegates and urging us to sing kumbayah," said Colorado Delegate and Rules Committee Member Kendal Unruh. "All this did was prove that Trump would muscle the delegates when given the chance. The grassroots have been betrayed."

"This grassroots movement has shifted from Free the Delegates to Free the Rules," said Regina Thomson, Executive-Director of Free The Delegates. "As delegates, we must once again push back on the overreach by the RNC and its staff."

Delegates Unbound was formed to preserve the legacy of freedom in the Republican Party.
